Heat-Shrink vs Cold-Shrink Cable Terminations

Two cable termination kits can carry the same voltage label and still be wrong for the same cable. In actual RFQs, the decisive details are often buried in a cable datasheet: conductor size, insulation material, screen construction, armor, overall diameter and whether the termination will be installed indoors or outdoors.

This is why choosing between a heat shrink and cold shrink cable termination should start with the cable and the installation site—not with a price comparison.

What is the practical difference?

A heat shrink termination is supplied as expanded polymer components that recover when heated. The installer uses a gas torch or approved heating tool to shrink the tubes around the prepared cable. A cold shrink termination is factory-expanded on a removable support. Pulling out the support allows the silicone or EPDM body to contract onto the cable without flame.

Both systems can perform reliably when the kit is correctly matched and installed. Their differences show up in site conditions, installation control and total project cost.

When heat shrink is a sensible choice

Heat shrink kits are familiar to many cable teams and are often economical for planned installations. They are practical when:

  • trained jointers and approved heating tools are available;
  • there is enough working space around the cable end;
  • the site permits controlled use of flame;
  • cable preparation can be kept clean and dry;
  • the contractor already follows a proven heat-shrink procedure.

Price alone should not drive the decision. Uneven heating, scorching, trapped air or insufficient recovery can damage an otherwise correct kit. Windy outdoor work and cramped switchgear compartments also make heating harder to control.

When cold shrink is worth the extra cost

Cold shrink cable terminations are useful where flame is restricted or installation consistency is a priority. Typical examples include substations, industrial plants, data centers, tunnels and maintenance work inside compact equipment.

The main advantage is not simply faster installation. The pre-expanded body applies continuing radial pressure as the cable expands and contracts during service. There is also less dependence on how evenly an installer moves a torch.

Cold shrink does not remove the need for skill. Screen removal, semiconductor cutback, cleaning, stress-control positioning and lug crimping still require careful work. A rushed cable preparation can defeat an expensive kit.

Five checks before selecting an MV cable termination

1. Voltage class

Confirm the rated voltage shown on the cable, not only the network description. A project described as “10kV” may use 8.7/15kV cable; a “35kV” project may specify 26/35kV cable. The termination must match the cable’s insulation level and the equipment interface.

2. Conductor size and material

State the conductor cross-section and whether it is copper or aluminum. This determines the terminal lug, crimping die and sometimes the kit range. Do not assume that a 240mm² kit automatically includes the correct lug.

3. Single-core or three-core construction

Three-core armored cable needs breakout, sealing and armor-earthing components that are not required in the same way on a single-core cable. Sending a clear cable cross-section drawing avoids many quotation revisions.

4. Indoor or outdoor installation

Outdoor terminations need weather sealing and suitable creepage performance. Indoor kits must fit the available phase spacing and cabinet clearance. For separable connectors, the bushing interface and current rating must also be confirmed.

5. Cable dimensions

Nominal conductor size is not enough. Insulation diameter, diameter over the screen and overall cable diameter can vary between manufacturers. These measurements are especially important when an existing cable must be terminated with a new kit.

What should be included in the kit?

A complete supply may include the termination body or heat-shrink tubes, stress-control components, breakout, sealing materials, phase markers, earth braid, constant-force springs, cleaning materials and installation instructions. Lugs, armor earthing parts and support brackets may be included or quoted separately.

Ask for a component list before approving the order. This is a simple way to prevent a site team from discovering that the kit is technically correct but incomplete.

A useful RFQ format

For a faster quotation, provide:

  1. cable manufacturer and full cable designation;
  2. rated voltage, number of cores and conductor size;
  3. copper or aluminum conductor;
  4. XLPE or other insulation material;
  5. screen and armor construction;
  6. indoor or outdoor installation;
  7. equipment connection type and bushing interface;
  8. required lugs and earthing accessories;
  9. quantity, destination and required delivery date;
  10. cable datasheet, section drawing or site photos.

FAQ

Is cold shrink always better than heat shrink?

No. The better option is the one that matches the cable, site restrictions, installer capability and project budget. A correctly installed heat shrink termination can be a practical solution, while cold shrink can reduce installation variability in demanding locations.

Can one 10kV termination kit cover every 10kV cable?

No. Core count, conductor range, insulation diameter, screen construction and installation type must all fall within the kit’s design range.

Should cable lugs be ordered with the termination kit?

Usually yes, if the conductor material, size, palm hole and equipment terminal are known. Confirming the lug together with the termination reduces interface risk.
