Oil and Gas Electrical Grounding Guide

Short answer: oil and gas electrical grounding should be selected by corrosion class, hazardous area rules, bonding continuity, conductor material, connection reliability and inspection requirements.

Grounding table

Corrosion control Use tinned copper, stainless steel, copper bonded steel or specified materials according to site chemicals and salt exposure.
Bonding conductors Confirm cable, strip, braid or jumper size for tanks, skids, pipelines and panels.
Connections Use exothermic welding or approved mechanical clamps according to inspection and maintenance rules.
Lightning and surge Coordinate ground rods, air terminals, down conductors, SPDs and earth bars.

RFQ parameters

Common wrong selection

Oil and gas grounding cannot be selected only by conductor size. Corrosion, inspection rules and hazardous area requirements must be checked.
