An overhead distribution project is rarely a single-product order. One bill of materials may combine conductors, insulator strings, line fittings, steel poles, crossarms, switching devices, transformer equipment, low-voltage distribution and earthing materials. If these items are quoted separately without system-level checking, small mismatches can delay installation at site.

For a recent Burundi 30kV overhead line project, Younxin coordinated a mixed equipment package covering the line, pole-top structures, protection devices, transformer area and grounding system. The work was not simply to find each product. The more important task was to make the equipment list technically consistent and practical for export.

What was included in the project scope?

The procurement scope covered five connected sections.

1. Overhead conductor and line hardware

The line package included ACSR conductors and the fittings needed to support, anchor, join and connect them. Depending on the installation position, a complete set may include:

A conductor designation alone is not enough for correct selection. The conductor diameter, aluminum/steel construction, mechanical load, clamp range and pole arrangement must be checked together.

2. Steel poles, crossarms and mounting accessories

The project used 16-meter galvanized steel poles rather than the concrete or timber poles shown in some reference drawings. This changed the mounting solution.

The pole package therefore needed more than the pole body. It also required crossarms, pole bands, mounting plates, bolts, reinforcement plates and the correct attachment points for insulator strings and guard wire.

For the tangent arrangement, the reference crossarm used hot-dip galvanized angle steel with a 2,100mm phase spacing. The reference members included L60 × 60 × 6mm and L80 × 80 × 6mm angle steel. Angle and terminal structures required separate mechanical review because they carry higher longitudinal loads.

3. Switching and line protection

The pole-top equipment included a gang-operated isolator, drop-out fuse cutouts and surge protection. Each device has a different job:

Treating these devices as interchangeable is a common procurement mistake. Their voltage class, current rating, mounting bracket, operating mechanism and accessories must be confirmed independently.

4. Transformer and low-voltage distribution

The project package also extended beyond the overhead line to the distribution point, including a 400kVA transformer and a 400V low-voltage main distribution board.

This section required a system consistency check. The transformer ratio, vector group, impedance, cooling method, installation environment and low-voltage board current must agree. If a source list contains conflicting voltage values, production should not begin until the client confirms the single-line arrangement.

5. Earthing and corrosion protection

The earthing package included 30 × 3mm galvanized flat steel, 1,500mm couplable stainless-steel earth rods, connectors, rod tips and anti-corrosion tape.

Mixed-metal connections deserve special attention. Stainless steel rods and galvanized flat steel should use a suitable connector and corrosion-protection method. The rod diameter, grade, soil conditions and target earth resistance should also be confirmed before final supply.

The main engineering challenge: one list, several standards

International project documents often combine local terminology, French or English descriptions, legacy utility practices and manufacturer-specific drawings. The Burundi list contained voltage references that needed to be reconciled before selecting Chinese equipment.

For a nominal 30kV network, Chinese suppliers may propose equipment in the 35kV system category with a highest equipment voltage of 40.5kV. This can be appropriate, but it should never be treated as an automatic text replacement. Insulation level, power-frequency withstand voltage, lightning impulse withstand voltage, creepage distance and local utility practice must all be checked.

Why package-level coordination matters

A missing bolt or incompatible bracket can stop installation just as effectively as a missing transformer. Package-level coordination helps the buyer reduce these risks by checking both the main equipment and the small installation accessories.

It also simplifies export preparation. Related items can be grouped by installation location, tagged against the BOM, photographed before packing and packed to reduce confusion at site.

RFQ checklist for a similar African overhead line project

To prepare an accurate quotation, send:

  1. the complete BOM with quantities;
  2. the single-line diagram and pole arrangement drawings;
  3. nominal system voltage and highest equipment voltage;
  4. conductor designation, diameter and standard;
  5. pole height, strength class and material;
  6. crossarm drawings and phase spacing;
  7. transformer technical data;
  8. required standards and test reports;
  9. destination port and final project location;
  10. preferred packing, marking and documentation requirements.

FAQ

Can Younxin quote a complete overhead line package from one BOM?

Yes. The package can cover conductors, insulators, line fittings, poles, crossarms, protection equipment, transformer-area equipment and earthing materials, subject to technical confirmation.

Can a 30kV project use Chinese 35kV equipment?

Often it can, but the decision must be based on the system’s highest voltage, insulation coordination and applicable standard. The labels alone are not enough.

Do you supply mounting bolts and pole accessories?

They can be included when the pole geometry, crossarm design and installation arrangement are confirmed. Buyers should state whether they require complete installation sets.
